Protaras Bowland CyprusThe Bowland Protaras is situated on the main strip in Protaras, slightly before the center and located just opposite the local Parking for easy access from outside of Protaras itself. It is also an upper level bar, not on the ground thus restricting sadly people in Wheelchairs.

We were invited to the opening night for 2011 and for a Blues show, more on that later. So, apart from the Bowling facilities what else is there for the Tourist to come and visit the place? Well, starting with the Bowling Alley itself which is a 3 Lane Alley with a computerised system and screen so all the family can follow the game. This is located on your right hand side as you come up the stairs into the place. There is also room for sitting at tables too so you could enjoy a meal or/and a few drinks as you wait you turn. Furthermore, the position of it also enables you to see any live shows happening without having to get up.

On the otherside, is where the bar is found and where there is enough space for numerous tables, and also a Pool Table too. In the corner diagonally opposite bar there is 3 Internet Computers and 2 Playstation 3 Systems which are also on line as well as the old flat arcade machines (which back up as table too if wanted!!). As you can see, there is something for everyone even without any shows. Furthermore to the place, there is also an outside veranda to sit at and enjoy the view out into the Mediterranean Ocean (especially during the day/early evening) or across the Protaras main road and watch as the people pass by or are stuck in the August traffic jams!!

So, that's the setting of the place so now on to the event of the Opening night with the Tony Blues Show, a one man tribute to the Blues Brothers & more! What can we say about him before we include a picture (which incidentally has already been posted for our Facebook friends), he was brilliant. He got the crowd going, joked with them but with his own style. His singing was excellent and performance as a whole spot on. The people who were there also enjoyed it as much as we did and must also mention the free buffet on offer which covered the Pool Table on the 1st night. (Of course the Table was covered!!).

So, overall you have a place which fits Protaras perfectly and with live shows and/or Karaoke too it is a place you could visit and not just during the night.

Photos coming soon....

Recycling Clothes, Linen, Curtains & more As you should know, Cyprus also does recycling and to a great extent too (Our previous articles on the subject: Paralimni Recycles Too!!, Protaras and Recycling your Batteries) which now has been taken yet another step forward.

Residents will have noticed large Purple Metal Containers around the town since February (although it began in other areas since end of July). This is where you can place the latest items for recycling but what can you place inside these containers you will want to know. Starting off with old CLEAN clothes placed inside bags, shoes, sheets, curtains, old handbags & belts too. In the case that the container is full do not leave your recyclable items outside but call the number which is written (99 722 121) on the container (There is one in the parking opposite Infant School on the road of the Football Academy).

The company is a non-profit organisation which will either distribute the reusable clothes to not so well off families either within Cyprus or abroad. Another part of the textiles, including clothes, handicrafts and works of art made from recycled materials, are also available to the public in low prices to cover the cost of recycling. Sorting and distribution is also operating abroad, where textiles are exported, and the textiles that cannot be reused are recycled to produce wiping cloths, fibres for new clothes, insulation and other useful materials. You can also read more on their website www.anakyklos.org (which is in English and Greek) about the efforts of the organisation.

So what are you waiting for? Have a look around & if you can't hand them down, recycle them around.

Carnival Parties in & around ParalimniAs everybody is aware of (in the Christian communities) Easter is coming up and this year it falls on the same day for all Christians just like last year.

This means it also means it's Carnival season and Paralimni won't be left out either. The first event is as always on Tsiknopempti, which is where we usually stuff ourselves with meat before the fasting period begins on Green Monday. Usually Families and friends get together, wearing fancy dress is optional, and have a good time and plenty of food.

So what better then to hold a party in the middle of the Agiou Georgiou square in Paralimni on Thursday, February 24 from 7pm (19.00) there will be just that where you can come and welcome the King of the Carnival party, King Carnavallos. (We no clue who made up the name).

Next up is another party, this time taking place in Laxia Palace (on the road to Pernera/Protaras) on Saturday, March 5 from 8.30pm (20.30) until late on. The event called "Dancing by The Lake" is a fancy dress ball and music provided by Andreas Pitsillides band.

  • Unique Decorations and a Happy Enviroment
  • A wide menu with a large selection of food on offer
  • Entertainment, surprises, music & dance too.

all for the cost of €40 per a person.

If you don't want a crazy party, usually the families and/or friends get together and hold their own parties in the comfort of their homes where they don't need to worry about getting caught by the law.

Finally, last but not least is on Sunday, March 6 there is a Carnival Parade starting from 2.30pm (14.30) from the B' Infant (Dimotiko) School and continue down Protaras Avenue, Paralimni until it reaches Saint Georges Square (Agiou Georgiou) where the celebration will continue. The Municipality is asking for all the people to dress up and come along, advertise and support the celebrations. Even if the weather does decide to rain, it won't be too cold to continue the festivities sensibly and safely.

So, you can start planning where to go and arrange your plans and may include some of these events too.

Protaras Events & Shows During 2010After another long season with so many changes taking place throughout the year with some places taking on a new look and others closing down early only to be replaced almost immediately with a similar style.  Let's not forget either the long hot summer (which finally  settled down to cooler weather in the middle of December).

Where to begin, probably from the changes to the place which started the season as open and closed to become something else during the season. We had two (2) of these places which became three (3) new places. First off we start with the closure of Jewel for 2 weeks in late June only to become the Brewery Protaras Restaurant and Bar which lasted up until middle/late November and we expect to reopen April/May. The other closure was even later on in the season (late June) with the Victorian Café & Restaurant closing down only to become two places. The first was the Costa Coffee making an appearance in Protaras too followed next to it with the Sofa-Sofa Lounge bar which are both still open as of writing. A number of places also went with a "Face-lift" for last season which improved the area for 2010. More of the same for 2011 please.

Anyway, continuing with the article last season was probably the most busiest ever for events through out the season. Apart from the usual tribute acts to Kylie, Robbie Williams, Michael Jackson, the Blue Brothers and of course Elvis Presley we also had numerous top name Greek Artists coming over like Vegas, Lava, Master Tempo & a few more Greek R&B stars, as well as two big superstars Despoina Vandi stayed in Protaras before her performance at Paralimni Stadium and the other being Michalis Xatzigiannis who also performed all around the area (Paralimni, Deryneia and Ayia Napa), a Saxaphonist making a few special appearances through the season, numerous Local & Greek DJ's also performed around Protaras itself (re - Nicos Varvaresos, Kostas Galatis, Nikos Souliotis & Nikos Markoglou) and during July/August many summer parties for the students and those who feel young. We also had the Ferrari owners of Cyprus come down and visit the area as they do every year for the last few years.

It would be unfair to forget the bands who played around the area (Echo are one of them), the numerous singers, the odd fire/magic show and of course if you wanted laughter of a different kind, drop in on the only permanent comedy Hypnotist in the area, a certain Mr Alex Antoniades who performs in Pernera & Protaras through out the summer season. That is almost all but must mention that there was also a Fashion Show & a Miss Tourism event within Protaras this year. Think of paradise or Adam and Eve, and if you know Protaras well you'll know the place that these events took place at.

After all that, let's see what 2011 brings to us, and if it is to be just as good if not better than 2010, starting earlier and ending later and why not.

Internet Facilities On Holiday in ProtarasWith the explosion of social websites in the last few years and the eternal need to keep your memories of those holidays with you, along with the desire to share them with others overseas, we all need use of the internet.

For those who take with them their laptops on holiday you'll may want to connect to the internet at some stage, whilst those who bring their cameras with them may even wish to put them up before they go home. Let's not forget the Foreign workers who also want to pt up their photos of places & their friends too as they stay for the summer. The demand for the internet is all around but you'll be wondering where those places where you can use the internet from are found.

Well Protaras, along with Ayia Napa and the other Tourist Areas, all have their Internet Cafés although Protaras itself only has 1 proper Internet café and Pernera too also has 1, there are many bars (including those in the Konnos, Pernera and Kapparis areas) which offer free wireless internet for their customers whether they be the tourist on holiday or on business, the local Cypriot from Nicosia or one of the workers for the summer season visiting a bar. You may even find internet services in some bowling alleys too and often at the Hotel your staying at. Each place has a different degree of service. Some offer just the free wireless connection, some may have 1 or 2 computers available inside for users to sit down and upload their photos on to social sites like Facebook, MySpace, Bebo and so many others.

There are also others who just wish to use a computer and put their photos from their cameras or even mobile phone cameras on to disc or USB memory sticks so that they can free up their memory cards to take more photos and finally there are those people who may wish to print out some of their photos for others to have.

Wherever you go on holiday, you can be sure that most of the time, you'll be able to find the internet services for your needs whatever they may be for.

Q Club - Master Tempo: Monday Morning, May 24Q Club is one of two night club's on the main Protaras strip. On this particular night, Monday morning of the Flood Weekend (Kataklismnos) it hosted the Greek Hip-Hop duo Master Tempo and it went down in style.

Upon arrival at the club, which you can find very easily as it is in the middle of the Tourist area, you'll come across the main entrance which has been totally changed and been brought a new modern sleek look for 2010 which is lit up by the blue neon sign of the name of the club on top against a white wall. After a misunderstanding at the entrance, but which was handled in a professional manor we went down the steps and entered into the club via two sets of double swinging doors.

Inside the club, the walls and columns have been decorated in a glittery silver design and the club's logo in green placed on a few walls behind the bars. There are two bars in the club place in diagonally opposite directions of each other and also there is a bar service available for those who've booked a table or spot to sit/stand at. This is handled again very professionally with a reservation manager on the entrance and then, a person to take you to your place on arrival. Even thought the club is spacious, on extra crowded nights it takes a little patience to get around the club if you wish to move around or get to the W.C. especially as a temporary stage wa set up to host the event correctly.

Enough of the club and moving on the second event of the night in Protaras, which as already said, was the Greek-Hip hop duo called Master Tempo. The music of the night was set mainly into Hip-Hop/R'n'B style of both Greek and International tracks with a few other tracks in to keep the crowd going. Just before Master Tempo took to stage the DJ slipped in 3 big summer tracks he'd already played in the last hour but thankfully the crowd danced to them tracks without leaving the dance floor. Finally the duo took to the stage about 10 past 2 in the morning and as you'd expect, out came the cameras and phones taking pictures (and the odd short video) which will be or have been loaded up on to the social networks. The duo raised the temperature in the club and as they sang their hits out, the club moved to them. There was also a little talk in between tracks and of course the announcement to thank the crowd for coming and point out too it was their first time in Protaras too. They entertained the crowd for around an hour with their hits which the crowed enjoyed to the full as proved by the amount of people dancing as they sang.

At the end of the event, they also posed with a few of the fans and of course the cameras were out to catch the moment too. Overall a massive event which came off well and showed that Protaras too can host big events like this.

Watersports in Protaras: Skiing, Power Boats, WindsurfingJust like in Ayia Napa, Protaras too has watersports available on the beaches for the tourist and locals to take part in should the feel the urge to do something more than lie on the sunbeds all day.

The options are dense starting off with Power Boats and Jet Skis. Most (f not all) of the Watersports people will have them out for hire. Those who offer Water-skiing or Paragliding obviously have them in their itinerary. Power boats are hired out for 1/2 hour or an hour and prices vary according to where you are. With the boats and depending on weather conditions too there's Paragliding available to. Weather conditions are a factor in Paragliding as no wind won't get you up in the sky and too much wind poses a safety risk.

On the subject of weather, Water Skiing is also effected depending on ability. A beginner will need smooth conditions to learn to Water Ski whereas someone who's been skiing for a while would welcome a few waves. Of course if the sea is too rough then all watersports are off including swimming. There's one place on the outskirts of Protaras which also offers Wakeboarding for all levels of skill, from beginners to the more experienced person. Jet skis are out for hire too but the time limits are different to that of the power boats and are 15 mins and 30 mins and too vary in price according to where you are .

Apart from Jet Skis, Powerboats and Paragliding you can also find the Banana boats for upto 8 people or try the rings either for 1 or 2 people. It'll be no fun if the water's flat as it would be nothing to make it like fun to be on either. Other Watersports available not powered by motors are your traditional Canoes, your Pedal boats, the Catamaran (which is not so common nowadays) and your Windsurfing along with the new sport similar to windsurfing - Kite surfing. On windy days & even extremely windy days you will find on the beach the Kite and Wind Surfers making the most of the windy conditions in their droves as these are the conditions that they make the most of their hobby/sport.

So as you see there are all sorts of watersports activities on the beaches of Protaras, your motor based sports like Jet Skies, Paragliding and Waterskiing, your fun stuff like the Banana boat and also your wind powered sports like Windsurfing, Kitesurfing and the traditional Catamaran too.

Limousine Taxis and LimousinesProtaras and it's surrounding areas all within the municipality of Paralimni have available for hire transportation of various sorts.

Apart from the obvious Taxis and Long Taxis as well as those mini-buses you can also, for those special occasions, hire out Limousine Taxis and/or Limousines too, often refered to as Limos.

It may be for a simple Wedding to take the Bride and Groom to and from Church where you might take a proper Limousine, or it may be a Limousine taxi to take you and your friends out for a big birthday party, maybe a 21st, 30th or 50th birthday or even a Wedding Anniversary for you and your loved one where you may prefer a proper Limousine. There are even persons who want to take their friends (or partner) out in style for no special reason at all except to make it special.

As for details of where to find such a Limousine for your needs you can either search via the web beforehand if you are staying at private accommodation, check with your hotel or your tour operator representative during your stay in Protaras, Kapparis, Pernera or even on the outskirts of Paralimni itself. They will surely have the details or able to find details for Limo hire.

For that special occasion or to make an occasion special there is always that something else available.

An Evening Trip In Early April along Protaras. On Saturday night (after a meal in main town Protaras) instead of going straight back home, I decided to take a walk down the main strip and then on coming back up decided to also drive around the whole of Protaras going down the side roads too.

The weather was a little cool during the night which then turned wintery with showers but left a smell of freshness as it fell for around half an hour (30 minutes if you prefer). Although generally Protaras was still quiet with places still not open, those places which were open were quite busy. Some were even very busy considering everything. I walked along the strip from the top half were I had my meal and then walked along up upto about 3 fifths of the way. Although the main strip of Protaras was basically the same with regards to the road there were noticeable changes to some of the buildings. The CTO office has now been moved on to the main strip of Protaras (but at the time it didn't cross my mind to see if the old office was now closed).

After walking back to my car with the rain getting heavier and noticing that some of the businesses in Protaras have also gone and changed their looks, at least on the outside, and now look a lot more welcoming than before. One of the two clubs in Protaras has undergone such a change that you'll think what the heck as you look at it in disbelief. On the subject of change, unlike in Ayia Napa, there is nothing too big going on as to repairing roads but if you head down from the very first side road (after McDonalds) there you will find a lot of work upgrading that little area. Although it was dark and the rain making things a little harder to see it was clear that works were going on here to put in place much need pavements.

As I drove around going down each side road to remind myself that there is more to Protaras than the main strip, it was interesting to see the changes which over the years have taken place but hadn't realised had changed. I didn't stop there as I ventured out and continued my tour of Protaras and extended it to the start of the road leading up to Cape Grecko. Travelling up the steep hill towards the top of it, on what is now an all changed road which had a total reconstruction about 2 years ago to make it a lot safer for all those who pass by and at the same time took into account the number of buildings which have been built on both sides of the road over the years. The new road takes into account these buildings and was built in such a way that the road looks beautiful in its surroundings.

A journey which brought back memories of a time when Protaras was vastly different.

Carnival Parties for Paralimni, Protaras & local areas. As everybody is aware of (in the Christian communities) Easter is coming up and this year it falls on the same day for all Christians.

This means it also means it's Carnival season and Paralimni is no exception either. The first event is on Tsiknopempti, which is where we usually stuff ourselves with meat before the fasting period begins on Green Monday. Usually Families and friends get together, wearing fancy dress is optional, and have a good time and plenty of food.

So what better then to hold a party in the middle of the Agiou Georgiou square in Paralimni on Thursday, February 4 from 7pm (19.00) there will be just that where you can come and welcome the King of the Carnival party, King Carnavallos. (We didn't make up the name).

Next up is another party, this time taking place in Laxia Palace (on the road to Pernera/Protaras) on Saturday, February 6 from 8.30pm (20.30) until you drop. The event will have entertainment provided by the Nicosia band Musicano by Dimitris Constantinou and Marcos Georgatsos. There will also be

  • Unique Decorations and a Happy Enviroment
  • A unique menu with a wide selection of food
  • Lots of surprises in a joyful spirit
  • Lots of dancing

all for the cost of €35 per a person.

If you don't want a crazy party and want to attend something calmer but still in the Carnival spirit then on Friday, February 12 there is just that. A Carnival celebration will take place in the Town Hall's Event room with Mantalinata, a Choir and the Children's choir of Paralimni all present. Entrance is free and the event starts from 8pm (20.00hrs).

Finally, last but not least is on Sunday, 14th February there is a Carnival Parade starting from 2.30pm (14.30) from the B' Infant (Dimotiko) School and continue down Protaras Avenue until it reaches Saint Georges Square (Agiou Georgiou) where the celebration will continue. The Municipality is asking for all the people to dress up and come along, advertise and support the celebrations. Let's hope the weather holds out and doesn't rain.

So, you can start planning where to go and arrange your plans to include some of these events too.

Aegean AirlinesAegean Airlines is an airline which includes in the price you pay everything except overweight luggage.

The airlines’ website allows you to plan your holiday to the price range you want to pay. You may need to adjust your departure and arrival days to accommodate your holiday but that is not a problem. Your meal, your seat and your luggage are all included in the price as well as any airport taxes you pay too.

Checking in is very simple and you can do it without any paperwork at all if you book on-line. All you need is your Passport or ID card and your already in the system. You are also allowed a piece of hand luggage on board too.

The Aeroplanes themselves are kept in top condition with seating is spaced so your legs are not squashed. As already mentioned, your meal is included in your price and the plane is warm and also quiet. No-smoking is on place on the flights too. The flight is as smooth as possible (depending on weather conditions of course) and during the flight you are kept informed of where you are. If at any point you'd like a pin-point position, ask the crew if they know. On that note, the cabin crew are always pleasant and of course tidy and with presentable uniform in their appearance.

Overall Aegean Airlines is an airline you will want to use again for your holidays to Cyprus and Protaras. What better way to start or end your holidays with a very good flight.

Protaras and Recycling your BatteriesWhat do you do with your batteries? Most likely you throw them away.

Why wouldn't we? We've no use for them when they are dead and no good to us so we put them in the dustbin where they go and end up in the rubbish heap along with other non-recyclable and recyclable rubbish.Well now there is a choice. The company A.F.I.S. Cyprus Ltd is now collecting your batteries at various points. Why should we care about what to do with our batteries? In the leaflet they are handing out at their collection points they offer 4 reasons:

1) Protect the Environment: A lot of the metals we use today come from the Earth and we cannot replace them. With batteries, living organisms - plants, trees, bugs etc. cannot cope with the pollution. With recycling we can reduce by a drastic amount that pollution.

2) We save energy: By reusing all ready produced products we reduce the energy (& time) of finding and extracting new metals. By recycling our used batteries we place back into the cycle the metal and we can reduce these energy levels by upto 80% for EACH battery by doing so.

3) Reduce the waste: Have you noticed (those who are recycling) how much your waste has been reduced? Rather than throwing Batteries away too, take them to get recycled.

4) Secure our health: Even though batteries are only 0.2% of our household waste it is 20% or 1/5 toxicity (poison) of the household waste. For something small it is a lot when you look at it.

When we talk of batteries we cover all types of batteries, Radio Cassettes, Speakers, Game Consoles (e.g. PSP's), Mobiles, Wireless Telephones, Watches, Cameras, Video Cameras, Cordless Power Tools, Remote Controls, Alarm systems and so on. From the factory it is made in it comes to us the user. Each time you throw a battery away, the cycle of life it is in ends, whereas if you place that battery in one of the collection points, it can get reused again and at the same time protect the environment.

So after all that you'll be now wanting to know where you can find places to place your batteries. Well you can start looking at Supermarkets (in Paralimni, the Carrefour Supermarket has a collection point), the Post Office and other Government service points have points and information too and of course for those with Kids or younger Brothers & Sisters in Schools. Also, you may see them about in other private places such as small businesses, Hotels, Banks etc etc etc.

So, from now on before you throw your batteries in the waste, think Green, Recycle them.

The fleet of taxis are always available during the day at anytime you may happen to need one. The fleet includes normal 4 and 7 seaters as well as your Luxury Taxi for that special occasion, for example a Wedding. The company consists of both Male & Female drivers and English or German speaking drivers are available too.

Drivers are available for day trips, tours to occupied Famagusta, and transfer to the Airport and so on. You'll find the taxis are kept clean inside and outside and you can pre-book your taxi either in person, through your hotel and even online before you even get on that plane over to Protaras, Cyprus.

Overall an excellent service that is available for those who would prefer to take a taxi than the Local bus service.

Watersports down Vrissiana BeachJust wanna write a quick review on the guys on the beach down from Vrissiana Beach Hotel.

Always game for a laugh in this quiet area, great friendly people who will help you out no matter what you try to do. These guys will guide you along going through the basics even if you know them.

Tried my hand at Water Skiing and from the start, although they messed me about a bit t the start as I was useless, they were there to help me and keep pushing me along until I got it right and lasted on the skis for a few minutes. Also, pushed into going on the Banana boat thingy (there was a spare place) on my last day there. What a ride, just don't fall off!!

Anybody looking in Protaras for a bit of action is more than welcome there, anybody looking for peace & quiet should go end of the day or elsewhere.

Kamakoura Japanese RestaurantKamakura restaurant situated in Eden Square found before the Bank Of Cyprus branch on the Hotel street. After listening to others talking about how they enjoyed their meal there, found me wanting to go. So, taking a few friends along with me, we went to see if all the talk was true.

Finding it was easy, on the main Hotel road in the middle of the two semi-roundabouts. The road is a one-way system which is helpful for people crossing the road. Anyway, we got out and walked upto the restaurant (where you can stop for drinks before or after the meal) and were greeted by a polite Head Waiter who suggested a few places to sit as the Restaurant was fairly busy but with room still available. We sat by the window over looking the whole place. We were attended to by a waitress who with a gorgeous smile banished any fears it was going to be a bad night. (Are all the staff this friendly? Yes is the truth.)

We ordered our meals and soon after a Chef came along and took his position within the cooking area. As you know, in a Japanese restaurant the customers surround the Chef (cook) so they need to be good. Before we realised it, we were enjoying and laughing at the antics of our Chef who as he cooked, kept us fully entertained at the same time with his tricks. OH, and watch out for the fire!! Our waitress was always close at hand and ready to supply us with more drinks when asked. We even tried some Japanese Beer which was different to the usual Beers we drink. Maybe it was the food which made it different or maybe they tricked us into thinking it was different!! Don't ask what we ordered, I couldn't remember it but the Sushi we did have was excellent.

Finally after about an 1hr 15mn (could've been longer) we made our way out of the restaurant (after having deserts which were offered after our meals) still happy with the Chef and smiling as we remembered his silly tricks whilst cooking and not forgetting the waitress either.

Wining & Dining in ProtarasOver the Past 3000 years, Cyprus has seen various rulers, invaders, foreign settlers and traders come and go.

Traces of different civilisations are evident in the local culture, and even the islands cuisine could not remain immune to foreign influences.

A closer look at traditional Cypriot dishes will reveal an overlap of well known flavours originating in Greece, Turkey, Armenia, Syria, Italy and even France

The island turbulent past has taught the local population especially in rural areas, to be self sufficient.

Most families used to produce their own  foods, such as 'puorgouri' (cracked wheat), 'halloumi' cheese, bread and smoked cured pork.

Other common products included cereals, olive oil and wine, which were stored in 'pitharia', which are the oversized onion-shaped terracotta pots that still adorn the countryside.

Thanks to the Mediterranean climate, fruit and vegetables have always been abundant in Cyprus.

Local Wines Old And New

Cyprus wines are among the worlds oldest, dating back to 2000 BC. Mosaics in the House of Dionysus in Pafos attest to the colourful history of the Cyprus vine.

Dionysus, the pleasure-loving god who taught Icarius how to plant vines in exchange for the hospitality he has shown him, is shown seated on a chair holding grapes.

Elsewhere, an inscription in Greek, which reads "the first wine drinkers", accompanies a mosaic depiction of two shephards quite drunk on Icarius's wine.

In fact, many renowned wines of the worl are made from vines brought to Europe from Cyprus after the Crusades.

Champagne, for example, may have originated from a choice cutting taken from Mount Olympus, in Cyprus.

Today, there is no other better known wine than the Cypriot Commandaria, a sweet, robust dessert wine that is said to be the oldest named wine in the World.

Called 'Nama' in antiquity, it so reminded Marc Anthony of Cleopatra's kisses that he gave the whole island to his legendary lover.

Nama was later renamed after Richard the Lionheart sold Cyprus to the Knights Templar. (The Grand Commandarie itself was the estate of the Knights at Kolossi).

The oversized Commandaria grapes are grown on the high southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, picked late in the season and sun-dried to enhance the sugar content. The wine is produced by fermentation in open jars.

Several other world class Cyprus wines are produced from indigenous grape varieties.

More then 100 varieties are cultivated in all, more than half of them in the Paphos District. Limassol is the main winemaking city and export centre, and home to the four large wineries, KEO, ETKO, SODAP and LOEL, which all offer guided tours.

Getting Married in ProtarasGetting Married in Cyprus

Infinite romance and blissful relaxation await honeymooners in Cyprus, the land where love itself was born.

After all, it was here in Cyprus that the ancient goodness of love, Aphrodite, emerged from the sea at Petra tou Romiou...... It may have happened in 3200 BC but her amorous spirit still reigns in Cyprus.

The allure of antiquity, the warmth of the Mediterranean sea and sun, and the legendary hospitality of the Cypriot the ultimate honeymoon and wedding destination.

Registry Office Weddings

There are two kinds of registry office weddings:

Marriage by Notice.... and......Marriage by Special License.

The main difference is that the Marriage by Notice requires 15 days of proceedings before the actual ceremony can take place, and a minimum stay of 20 days in Cyprus.

Marriage by Special License can be performed within 3 - 4 days.

In both cases the maximum validity of the license is 3 months. However, Marriage by Notice costs less than Marriage by Special License. For both licenses the following documentation is needed:

  • Passports
  • Birth Certificates
  • 'Decree of Absolute' if divorcee

  • Affidavit

The Ceremony takes place in the Town Hall of your chosen resort city under license and the Marriage Officer or the Mayor can conduct the ceremony in English.

  • Passports
  • Birth Certificates

  • Death Certificate if widow/er

It is important to note that, for a Catholic marriage to be valid, a registry office ceremony must be concluded prior to the religious marriage.

You should advise the priest of your local parish of your intention to contact the Catholic service in Cyprus, who will in turn will let you which documents you will have to present to the priest who will be performing the religious service.

All relevant documentation for the above must be obtained prior to departure. Ordained Anglican chaplains will conduct the ceremony by prior appointment.

All you need to have with you is your original wedding certificate. The cost is the same as for a church wedding, and no marriage license or affidavits are required.

Tourist Information for ProtarasLocated at the crossroads of three continents, Cyprus is easily accessible from Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle east.

More than 40 airlines including Cyprus Airways, the island's national carrier, operate scheduled flights from and to Larnaca and Paphos international airports.

Where to Stay in Cyprus.

Visitor Accomodation ranges from cosy villas and apartments to 3,4 and 5 star Resort Hotels.

Most Hotels provide modern common areas, contemporary room amenities and a high level of service.

Hotels with 3 stars and over have at least one swimming pool and usually at least one restaurant. Buffet style dining is very popular and combines Cypriot and International Cuisine.

Apartments are particularly popular among those who value independence, budget conscious travellers and guests planning a longer stay in Cyprus.

Getting around in Cyprus.

The best way to get around Cyprus is by car. Hire cars can be arranged either in advance or through a local agency once in Cyprus.

If you do not wish to drive yourself, intercity service taxis and regular taxis are readily available.

Public Transport until mid-July 2010 was available but limited. Now, there has been a complete overhaul of the system and the new bus timetables can be found here.

Also, on the top the Cyprus Tourist Office for further information and also maps to use for guidance around both Protaras and the rest of the island.

Taxis in ProtarasThey are everywhere you go. Just off the "squares", on the main road, outside the bars.

If you cannot see one then you do not have to wait long for one with the exception of August when the Cypriots turn to tourists too!! Be more patient during that month and if you're taking a Taxi to the Airport add more time to your Journey.

Also, you can always call a taxi from your accommodation’s reception (assuming there is one.) All hotels will work with at least one Taxi provider and will also let you know how long so you can squeeze in a drink before it comes.

Just in case you’re a large family or a group of more than 5 people then there are stretch taxis available.

You can even hire out Limo Taxis for those special occasions or just to enjoy the ride in one!

Sports & Leisure in ProtarasCyprus in general is adapting to other forms of sports apart from football. The Paralimni Football team (since Protaras is part of Paralimni) plays in the 1st division (Top Level) of Cypriot football and many foreign teams descend down on Protaras in the winter months to train and sometimes you may even find an English lower league team in town too. The main town also boasts a Volleyball team (also in the 1st Division) and a Basketball team (2nd division).

Within Protaras itself, you can find Mini Golf courses, Tennis courts (within the Hotels but open to the public too), Water Aquariums and a Sea Museum. There's also the Waterpark on the outskirts of Protaras.

On the beaches, there are Jet skies (usually for 15 mins), speed boats, water skiing etc. Not to forget the Paragliding and Windsurfing facilities available as well on many beaches.

Should one wish to escape Protaras other forms of leisure such as Day Trip boats, Day Trip Safaris are available.

Tourist Attractions in ProtarasProtaras is not a one road tourist place. For those who want to go and discover more there are numerous places to look for and see.

For starters, before the entrance to Protaras (coming in from Paralimni) there is the picturesque Church of Ayios Elias situated on the top of the hill overlooking Protaras. Many pre-Wedding parties go there to take photos of and with the Bride & Groom either at the top where the Church is or below in the Gardens.

Just off the main Hotel Road is the well known Blue Flag beach, Fig Tree Bay which gets so many visits over the summer on its name alone but for those who want to see it in its full beauty then avoid the mass bodies over Early July to Late August. Going along in the same direction is Konnos Beach which is a little less than 2 Kilometers from the main Protaras resort. The view from the top of the road is just amazing and when you reach the bottom of the hill to go to the beach nothing is lost as you look over the Mediterranean Sea. To add weight to our thoughts, Protaras has been awarded as the 3rd best European Beach Resort for 2011. Read here the article.

The last place of interest in this direction boarders Ayia Napa and Paralimni, being Cape Grecko. This spot is not a beach or a Church but is the essence of nature and a reminder of how Protaras was before the Tourist Business came along. There are countless nature walks available as well as controlled sightseeing too.

Going back in the other direction towards Paralimni you can find the Protaras Waterpark turning off towards Pernera and if you carry on going straight to Paralimni without turning, you'll find the Ocean Aquarium Park just before the Ayia Triada roundabout. The Aquarium is open all year round with closing times alternating according to the season.

Vehicle Hire in ProtarasWithin reason, you name it, you can hire it. Scooters, Mopeds, Cars, Jeeps and now especially over the last two years you can hire quad bikes to name but a few.

Also, for those looking for an alternative set of wheels, some offer bicycle hire too with helmets should one wish to be safer.

There are numerous car hire companies around and most co-operate with either your accommodation or your holiday representative should you need further information.

Ask them for leaflets so you can have in writing all the prices available.

Most offer full insurance and also offer you various damage waivers if you wish to avoid any unnecessary disruptions to your holiday due to accidents which are due or not due to your actions.

The cars range from the lower CC engines to the higher ones including the more luxurious ones.

Also available are Land Rovers for the larger families or two families wishing to go together.

Restaurants in ProtarasEating out, a highlight of every holiday, is a good way to sample local flavours.

Choose one of the many reputable taverns, and if the menu seems daunting, just order a 'meze', which will allow you to nibble on a full range of traditional specialities, all in one sitting!

'Meze' is short for 'mezedhes', ie tidbits, and is a gastronomic experience that appears in some form or other throughout the Mediterranean region.

Share a meze in Cyprus and you have tasted the true flavours of the island.

Depending on the tavern, a meze could include up to 30 miniature dishes!

Since they are not all served at once, dont be tempted to finish every dish that arrives on the table, or you may not be able to enjoy the final offerings, which are often the best.

Once your meze is ordered, what can you expect to eat?

First comes the olives, black and green, together with various dips, a basket of fresh village bread and a bowl of village salad.

These are followed by octopus in red wine, snails in tomato sauce, brawn, and pickled capers and cauliflower.

Bunches of green - some tossed in oil and bound with an egg - and roots such as carrots and kohlrabi, precede fish bites of some kind, either sardines, tiny red mullet, or kalamari.

Next comes the grilled halloumi cheese and slices of smoked Cyprus ham, followed by meatballs, grilled pork rissolis and smoked Cyprus Sausages.

Now come the hot specialities including meat dishes such as afelia, moussaka and stifado, which lead to the popular ' souvlaki' pork kebab, the 'kleftico' which is baked in a sealed oven, as well as pieces of chicken, arriving straight from the grill.

Having reached this far, you can safely say that you have experienced your first meze!

The only thing that might still tempt you is some fresh fruit, fruit preserves or a traditional sweet pastry.

Needless to say, a proper 'meze' ia a full-scale feast, best reserved for a special occasion - or a healthy appetite!

Clubs in ProtarasProtaras being more family orientated means not as many young adults inhabit the area thus not so many clubs either.

The main strip, the Hotels road, in Protaras has two Clubs on it both playing a wide range of music within.

These two are the main two along with a couple of others around the nearby area.

For the winter season though, the Apollon (on the road into Protaras from Paralimni) re-opens with Bouzouki.

Bars & Pubs in ProtarasLocally referred to as bars, which have opening hours from early in the morning all the way through to the very early hours of the next morning.

Many of these pubs offer Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner for people not wishing to either go to restaurants or stay within the confinement of their accommodation.

Each pubs/bars has its own individuality according to how it feels and more so in Protaras you'll find some named after famous TV Shows e.g. Only Fools & Horses or Friends.

There are pubs dedicated to Karaoke only, others have a couple of hours only. Bars in and around Protaras tend not to follow Ayia Napa as much especially during June, July and August where the Cypriots from Nicosia and other non-seaside towns come and join the tourists too to create an even wider multi-national culture in the area. You will find that modern Greek hits are also played during that period and you may even get Zorbas playing too.

You'll also find a larger range of live acts and shows too due to Protaras being more family orientated.
